I have created a dedicated blog site along with its very own rss feed (view here) for my final year project. The typeface was designed by Brianislav Cirkovic, read more about him and the typefaces here.

Format – Questions

There are a few questions I need to ask myself as I begin to work on this project. They are:

Which format really excites me?

How can I be innovative with this format?

Who has done interesting work with the format before?

What processes and techniques can I explore and investigate?

How can I engage and excite the people who will be viewing this work?

Over the next few days I will be answering these questions.

Final year project // formats//

It’s the 8th of march 2010. On a sunny Monday afternoon, the Design For Graphic Communication course assembled for the final year project briefing. It had been a long time since everyone had seen each other. There were a few minutes of catchup talk, a lot of us were enquiring about how each others projects have gone, how they think their current grade will affect their prospects of going into the third year and also the “did you see LOST” conversations that got a few people animated. I dunno if they just couldn’t contain themselves or if they were somehow impossibly mimicking the smoke monster.

The room fell silent as our bearded course director Darren Raven walked in, with a faint smile on his face. He seemed to be uncomfortably holding a laptop, sheets of handouts and cables, all of which looked like they were just about to fall out of his hands. He successfully places all the aforementioned items on the table and swiftly, if not magically, connects the laptop to the projector and behold the words “final major project” are gleaming on the wall.

You couldn’t hear it but the whole class took a deep breath. We knew we had a mammoth job ahead of us. For me, I shared that thought, however I also felt excited! The type of excitement Simon Peggs character from Star Trek felt when he arrived on the Enterprise. Back to earth tho, and minus J. J. Abrams horizontal lens flares, we watched and listened as Darren, along with his power point presentation, explain what our final project will be.

We learned that the final major project would be entitled FORMAT. Named Format because we were given the freedom to choose one of the following formats

Posters/ folding broadsheets
websites/screen based
Maps
Font
Printed Matter (stationary, leaflets, bank notes etc.)
Magazines

The project national is to produce a piece of graphic design and supporting research document that shows off the potential of the chosen format and your creative skills as a designer. Darren instructed that we are being asked to be creative and innovative with our chosen format. The client is ourselves and the audience is the design industry. He said he is in the process of getting some big name industry designers, he named a few, none of which I understood or heard. He also went on to say that LCC is organising getting alot of press to the show to view the work.

So that is how the start of this project went, we are all excited, scared, but raring to go!

Typoflat project by Brianislav Cirkovic

Brianislav Cirkovic is a designer currently in the US who has work with brands such as Ford, 20th Century FOX, Activision, Microsoft, Diesel, Sony, and much more has created these beautiful typographic vector typesets. Its is part of an experimental project whereby any designer can choose to take part in. The Vectors are available to download from www.typoflat.com.

The idea is to have this free flow of creation where no clients or money are involved, just a pure passion for creation and form experimentation. Not every character, image or vector is perfect so please feel free to take full liberty and adjust it so it fits your needs, experiment and never forget to enjoy the process!

There are six sets of vectors available to experiment with they are Drea, Dron, Monk, Super Star, Nest, and Aroma.

Dron and Drea both consist of Typefaces: capital letters from A-Z and numbers from 0-9 and come in a range of weights.

Monk and Super Star consists of capital letters only while Nest and Aroma are vector shapes and graphics.

Nest and Aroma are beautiful abstract vector shapes.

Brianislav encourages people to experiment by creating design pieces using these resources and tweeting and RT about it. All the typefaces are free to download and use without any restrictions for personal use. Find out more and get experimenting at www.typoflat.com.

A simple but nice website that captures the worlds tweets that mention helvetica. The site, created by George Wiscombe, looks for tweets that mention the Helvetica typeface.

This self initiated project was born out of my love for Helvetica and Twitter. Helveti-Tweet uses a twitter API to stream tweets Helvetica related tweets into a stylish, swiss themed website.

David Cameron campaign mocked

During a parliamentary debate in the house of commons, David Cameron’s election campaign billboard that you may have seen while driving or walking down the street, was the target of criticism and ridicule prompting remarks of airbrushing a retouching. In the video below from ITN, Brown jokes, “what you see, clearly is not what you get”, and that “if you can’t get your picture right how can you get your policies right?”.

A website called mydavidcameron.com has gone one further and airbrushed some humourous and hilarious interpretations of the conservative election campaign. Here are a few of them that I have picked from the website.
